  • At NKESTI Government Secondary School, a large number of young male and female students crowded around the school gate. Everyone you saw had a gloomy face, filled with anger, sadness, and tension. As they came out, noise erupted among them—arguments broke out between the boys and girls, all in frustration.

    One angry young man said,

“Honestly, the governor of Benue is a useless bastard. Damn him! That big fool doesn’t deserve to rule this state. Imagine a man who gives us no jobs and keeps closing schools every day because of his stupidity. That useless man—he’ll just wait until we’re in the middle of studying and then bring this nonsense upon us. He hasn’t done anything good at all. That bastard son of—”

    Fauu!

He suddenly felt a heavy slap land on his face. A furious woman rushed at him.

“Shut up, you bastard!” she shouted, continuing to insult him in the Tiv language.

(“God is watching you… you fool… I won’t let you speak ill of the king like that…”)

A young man, holding his waist in anger, said,

“Don’t you dare let me hear you insult the governor of this state again. If you do, I’ll make sure your whole family suffers, you rude fool!”

    Another replied,

“So you’re defending him and telling me not to insult that cursed governor? Seriously?”

    The first one said,

    “Just mind yourself.”

    Others began shouting,

“Why did you slap Fahat? Of course the governor will be insulted! He’s the one causing all this trouble. No one will keep quiet while he ruins everything. We were in the middle of school and he shut it down. His own children are studying abroad while he stops us from studying here. Honestly, this time we must protest against him all the way to Makurdi. We must see the end of this nonsense!”

“Yeah! We must go and confront him!” they kept shouting.

    Fahat added,

“Just because of his stupidity, the closure will even last until March! Just because we’re children of the poor, he thinks we’ll accept it? This time we won’t agree—no matter what happens, we’ll go as far as our strength allows!”

They continued speaking harshly and angrily. Nagari kept quiet because the situation was beyond him.

Meanwhile, she slowly approached the office door. She looked around carefully to make sure no one was there. Then she pushed the door open, went inside, and locked it behind her.

He slowly looked up just as she began unbuttoning her shirt. He stared at her without blinking. His mind began to race, his heart pounding rapidly. He hoped she would come closer to him—perhaps he would feel some calmness in his heart.
